Insurance Guide
Filing a claim does not have to be confusing. Here is how the process really works, and where the right documentation makes the difference between a claim paid in full and one that falls short.
Start here
Most policies have two requirements that matter in the first day. Report the loss promptly, and take reasonable steps to prevent further damage. These can happen at the same time. A restoration team stops the spread and starts documenting while you open the claim.
When you call your insurer, you will get a claim number and an adjuster will be assigned. Write down the claim number and the name and contact of your adjuster.
What to gather
The claim is paid on what can be proven. The stronger your record, the less room there is for the loss to be underestimated.
Visual proof of the damage before anyone removes or repairs anything.
A restorer's documented readings show how far the water spread, including inside walls.
An itemized scope of the work needed, priced to industry standards.
The adjuster visit
The adjuster inspects the damage and writes an estimate of what the insurer believes it will cost to repair. This is where having your own documentation matters, because the adjuster's first estimate is a starting point, not always the full picture.
When iDri is involved, we meet the adjuster on site and walk the loss with them, readings and scope in hand. Documenting to the same standard the adjuster uses is what gets claims agreed without a back and forth. See how we handle insurance claims.
Mitigation and repair
Most water losses split into mitigation, which is the emergency drying and removal, and repair, which is putting the home back together. Insurers often handle these separately. Mitigation is billed for the work already done to stop the damage, and repair is estimated for the rebuild.
iDri is a licensed general contractor, so the same team can take you from the emergency drying through the reconstruction, with one documented file for the whole loss.
Getting paid
Once the scope is agreed, the insurer issues payment, often minus your deductible and sometimes in stages. If your mortgage company is named on the check, they may need to endorse it. Keep every invoice and receipt so the file is complete if a supplement is needed later for damage found during repairs.
Questions
It can, and it depends on your insurer, your history, and the cause of loss. A single sudden accidental loss is treated differently from a pattern of claims. Many homeowners decide it is worth filing when the damage is well beyond their deductible. That is your call, not ours.
It varies widely. A straightforward claim can resolve in a few weeks, while a larger or disputed loss takes longer. Fast, thorough documentation at the start is the single biggest factor in keeping it moving.
No. You have the right to choose your own restoration company and contractor. A preferred vendor works from the insurer's list, while an independent company like iDri works for you and documents the loss to make sure the claim reflects the real damage.
A detailed, IICRC standard scope with moisture readings and photos gives you the evidence to push back. If the carrier's estimate misses damage, documentation is what supports a supplement. In larger disputes a public adjuster can also represent you.
