Emergency Guide
The first hour matters. These are the steps that protect your safety, your home, and your insurance claim, in the order they should happen. Serving the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County.
Step one
Water and electricity are the real danger in the first minutes. If water is near outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel, do not walk into it. Shut off power to the affected area at the breaker only if you can reach it without standing in water. If you cannot reach it safely, leave it and call an electrician or your utility.
Watch for slip hazards and ceilings that sag or bulge. A bulging ceiling is holding water and can come down without warning. Keep children and pets out of the area until it is clear.
Step two
If the water is coming from a plumbing failure, shut off the supply. For a single fixture, use its local shutoff valve. For a burst pipe or an unknown source, close the main water shutoff for the house. If the water is coming in from outside, focus on moving belongings to dry ground rather than chasing the source.
A plumber stops the leak. A restoration company handles everything that the water already touched. You will likely need both.
Step three
Your insurer pays based on what can be proven. Five minutes of documentation now protects the claim later.
Take wide shots of each affected room and close ups of damaged items, then keep going as you move things. More is better.
A slow video walkthrough with the date captures context that still photos miss.
Hold onto receipts for anything you buy to mitigate, and do not throw away damaged items until they are documented.
Step four
Move furniture and valuables to a dry area. Lift draperies off wet carpet, take up small rugs, and place foil or wood blocks under furniture legs to stop staining. Mop or blot standing water if it is clean and safe to do so.
Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, and do not turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. These steps are about slowing the spread, not finishing the job.
Step five
Once the immediate source is handled, the priority is getting the structure dry to standard before mold sets in. A licensed restoration team extracts the water, sets professional air movers and dehumidifiers, and monitors moisture until the building is dry, then handles the repairs. iDri documents every loss to the IICRC standard and bills your carrier directly. Questions
Call a restoration company first or at the same time. Most policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and a restoration team can stop the spread and document the loss while you open the claim. Then notify your insurer promptly.
You can mop up clean water from a small spill. But standing water, soaked drywall, wet carpet, or any sewage needs professional extraction and drying. Water wicks into wall cavities and under flooring where a towel cannot reach, and that hidden moisture is what grows mold.
Quickly. Mold can begin to develop within 24 to 48 hours on wet materials, and the longer water sits the more it spreads and the worse the damage category becomes. Same day response limits both the cost and the health risk.
Yes. Photos and video taken before anyone moves or removes anything create a record of the loss. A professional restorer adds moisture readings and a documented scope on top of that, which is what gets a claim paid without a fight.
